tech question for oppo, i want a phone cable so i can plug my phone into my car (2014 Chery J3) only issue is the radio unit in the Chery takes Mini USB.
so i need one with Apple Lightning connector to Mini USB, any ideas where to find one?
tried locally. looked on ebay and amazon
the only ones i could find came up as being discontinued.
or basically am i shit out of luck and will need to use an adaptor?

Something like this (obviously find a cheaper one)
:
https://www.amazon.ca/AmazonBasics-Lighting-Cable-iPhone-iPad/dp/B07DC9SBLQ/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=lightning+to+mini-USB&qid=1598096528&sr=8-4
With something like this on the end?
https://www.amazon.ca/LUTIONS-Type-5-Pin-Female-Adapter/dp/B071R841Z3/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=usb+to+usb+mini&qid=1598096595&sr=8-14
I’m sure there are cheaper versions of each out there, I was just posting them for the idea. But a lightning to normal USB cable with a USB -> Mini-USB adapter tip on the USB end would work...? Janky...but it would work?

So the reason you aren’t finding anything is that such a cable should not exist. Up until the modern USB C port, USB was divided into T ype-A ports and Type-B ports. Type-A ports are the powered host ports while Type-B ports are the unpowered device ports. What you have there mini-B port, so connecting a L ightning cable really doesn’t make any sense at all (there are mini-A and even mini-AB ports, but I’ve never actually seen them used, except for totally different purposes where reusing the port design and cables was convenient ).
So yeah, you are looking for something that’s pretty weird, and probably finding some adapter is going to be your best bet, though even then I’m not sure a mini-B to female A connector is a thing that exists either.

might have to, i have the cable with std USB end, as it came with the phone when i got it. was hoping to get a cable to plug straight in and not have to dick around with an adaptor.

I’ve found some, but they all seem pretty pricey...

wondering then if i get a cable and chop the USB connector off and fit a mini USB connector. what are the chances it would still work?
or am i over complicating it?

price isn’t an issue ultimately.

just looked into that one, the shipping of it kills it for me, USD$28 to ship a USD$25 cable.

Wou
ld definitely work as long as you soldered the wires correctly! I love old keyboards and have two that used to have those big DIN plugs on ‘em:
Snipped those off and soldered the newer PS2 plugs on so I could plug them into modern computers (the wiring is the same, it’s just that the pinout on the plugs was different)...they work fine!
I’ve also taken broken flash drives that the plug was ripped off of, bought Dollar Store USB cables and soldered the snipped off cable ends onto the flash drives to get them working again and sealed them with hot glue
to get files off:
Janky...and not quite the same situation as yours, but they work fine (I still use them around the house as USB boot disks and stuff)
and, as USB is USB, you should easily be able to just attach a USB Mini plug on!

Yeah, the shipping for some things is killer :(

welcome to Australia basically, that’s the problem when you’re in the arse end of the world.

Couldn’t you get a usb a female to Mina a adapter? And just plug your regular lightning /usb a plug in?

Shipping shouldn’t really be a problem for you when most stuff ships from China. When I order shit on amazon or eBay that comes from China it takes anywhere from a week to 4-6 weeks to get it here to rural, northern Canada.(I’m over 7 hours away from any major Canadian city). Technically you are way closer to China than we are.

you haven’t seen the “speed” of Australian customs officers

couldn’t even find an adaptor here today.
no one st ocks mini-USB ones for some reason
ordered one from ebay tonight, melbourne warehouse. so should be here by end of week (if i’m lucky - thanks Australia Post!)
but i’d rather have a cable direct in.

Sounds like a great excuse for a new car sound system with Bluetooth and all the shizz!

i’m not into that sort of shit, i just want what is standard in the car to work
it s houldn’t be this hard

It’s not clear if your head unit has Bluetooth. If it does, then you can use as standard usb plug for the lighter to get power and just connect to the head unit via Bluetooth.

The car dash has a socket that takes MINI USB as pictured ? Very odd and an incorrect implementation.

not sure about bluetooth
![]() 08/22/2020 at 09:50 |

It’s in the radio unit
![]() 08/22/2020 at 09:51 |

Are you sure that mini is meant to be used that way?
Also the radio would need to specifically support iPhone work pluged in that way.
Is there no 3.5mm jack?
I have one of these in my Jaguar:
Works beautifully and adds BT calling ability if you don’t have it otherwise

i’ll check for a 3.5mm jack, but i don’t think so
why wouldn’t the mini usb be the right spot?

try one of these with a standard apple charging cable?
![]() 08/22/2020 at 10:20 |

If it’s a DIN sized head unit I’d just get a new head unit with Bluetooth.

Though the port doesn’t
quite look the right shape, this is probably USB OTG. You need one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/SaiTech-Mini-USB-OTG-Digital/dp/B00VWTD7CQ
plus a normal lightning cable. It’s not much more expensive or complex than a single cable.

Now that's weird
![]() 08/22/2020 at 11:14 |

I don’t think it’ll work. It’s probably just a USB port to accept USB Mass Storage Devices (e.g. USB sticks and Android phones acting as USB sticks which is no longer supported).
But if you want to try, y ou could get an “ mini-USB OTG adapter cable” to convert it to a full size USB.

No one stocks them because it’s a pretty obsolete connector type and already was obsolete in 2014. Who ever decided to use that plug should at the very least deserve a smash to the back of the head.

If I had a dollar for every time I told myself that while working on cars, I could afford to pay someone else to do it.

As others have mentioned this is a bastardization of miniUSB and I can’t say how well your head unit in the Chery will handle an iPhone but this will electrically make the connection. You might want something longer than this cable, just to avoid all the connections right at the dash.

Just for reference, here’s the search criteria I dumped into the Google:
mini USB to USB A female

I am when I really need to get files off non-functioning flashdrives!!! lol
As for the keyboards, I just prefer the feel of old ones :P - my ‘DD’ keyboard is a 1993 Compaq RT101...much beige, and no Windows key! :P

looked today, no 3.5mm jack
no bluetooth

no bluetooth in my car, was optional but original owner didn’t ask for it

Bummer. Looks like you’ll need that adapter after all.
